Chemical peels simply work by removing dead skin cells and encouraging new cells to grow, leading to a fresher, more radiant skin. The purpose of a peel is to remedy skin ageing, revitalize the skin, and treat pigmentation marks, sun damage, acne and acne scars. The results can be life-transforming!
Depending on the depth one wishes to target - superficial (AHA), medium (TCA) or deep (Phenol) peels can be done. At, Skinlogic Phenol peels are not performed as other safer skin peels are available that is equally effective.
Skinlogic uses a range of medical grade chemical peels that are suitable for all skin types. Chemical peels offered are from medically reputable brands like Neostrata, Optiphi, Optoderm and SkinTech.
All peels are carried out by an experienced practitioner. A medical grade chemical peel is not an exfoliation treatment that can be done at home.
Depending on the condition of your skin and the results you are looking for, Skinlogic will help you choose the correct peel and daily care products you need that is specifically designed to treat your skin concern.
How does a medical grade skin peel work?
All peels work by applying a solution that is designed to exfoliate your skin and encourage it to refresh itself by stimulating healthy new skin cells to form. This encourages new collagen production and cell renewal, to reveal glowing and fresh looking skin. Skin Peels is not limited to improving your face only; this rejuvenating treatment can be used to refresh the hands, neck and other areas as well.
The treatment is pain-free, though depending on how deep we exfoliate, some may experience mild discomfort from tingling to a slight burning sensation. Deeper peels can lead to light swelling of the affected area or peeling of the skin for a few days after the procedure. At Skinlogic we will advise you on the right type of peel for you, devising a specific treatment plan to achieve optimum results for your skin.
Which type of skin peel is the right treatment for me?
Peels can be used to treat a whole range of skin complaints, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne and acne scarring, enlarged pores, dark areas or spots and sun-damaged skin.
Each skin peel is customized for your skin type and specific skin problem. The depth of your peel will depend on:
All of our skin peels are carried out by aesthetic practitioners who are trained and experienced in using stronger concentrations of skin peels.
Do I need to prepare for the skin peel?
Following the assessment for your suitability, you will be advised on which products to use to enhance and maintain the results of your skin peel. The healthier your skin barrier is, the better results you will get with less downtime.
What happens during my skin peel?
Firstly we cleanse and thoroughly degrease your skin. The skin peel solution will then be applied to the skin on the treated area. Depending on the depth of your peel you may experience a warm, mild prickling sensation as with glycolic peels; with a TCA peel this sensation is much more intense; however, the skin is calmed with the application of specialized products to enhance your treatment and aid recovery.
How many treatments will I need?
Superficial peels such as glycolic peels require a course of 4-6 treatments every week to achieve optimum results. Medium TCA peels can be used as a one off treatment, however, depending on your initial skin condition, we may prefer to do a treatment 2 weekly for about 2 to 4 treatments to achieve an even more dramatic results.
Who is not suitable for a Skin Peel?
Chemical Peels are not advisable if you are pregnant or breast feeding or you have been prescribed Roaccutane (vitamin A) in the past 6 months.
Are there any side effects?
Skin Peels are normally safe procedures when performed by an experienced aesthetic practitioner. However, for medium and deeper skin peels risks such as infection, while extremely infrequent, is a possibility.
What is the difference between an express peel and a treatment peel?
Express peels at Skinlogic involve skin cleansing, peeling, application of a skin-specific serum and aftercare with sun protection. This may take about 45 minutes. With a treatment peel, we include a massage and mask to give the whole process a bit of a pamper aspect and to optimize results.
Prior to your peel you may be advised to use specific skin care, depending on your skin’s condition. Specific skin care is designed to reduce pigmentation and they improve the results seen from your skin peel. It may also reduce the healing time. The creams usually include one or more of the following: Retinoic acid, AHA's or Hydroquinone.
Patients having a medium depth Skin Peel who suffer from cold sores will be advised to take anti-viral medication.
Superficial peels result in mild redness and occasional swelling that will resolve in 48 hours. The experience is similar to mild sunburn. Most people can continue their normal activities. Make-up can be applied a few hours after the procedure. In rare cases you may experience light peeling, but this is rare.
Medium deep TCA peels result in a more intense redness after the treatment and mild swelling. Your face will feel tight and the skin will go darker over the next couple of days. The peeling process begins around day 3 after the procedure and can last 3-5 days. You may wish to take time off work after a medium depth peel.
You are under no obligation to book the treatment with us after your consultation, however, should you do wish to book a treatment this can be done for you after your consultation or at a later date via phone or e-mail.
At Skinlogic we can assure you that we value your health and wellbeing. You will only be seen and treated by qualified and experienced professionals.
During the Treatment
Before your treatment you will be provided with a detailed consent form. You will be asked to read and sign this prior to your having your treatment.
You will have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions you may still have regarding the treatment.
Your practitioner will cleanse the area to be treated. Depending on the peel strength, most patients report feeling just mild discomfort and a tingling/prickling/burning sensation. This part of the procedure is over quite quickly - within 5-10 minutes.
After the procedure, the skin is calmed with the application of specialized products to provide comfort, enhance your treatment and aid recovery.
